Why Scientists Call Spirulina and Chlorella “Superfoods”

Both chlorella and spirulina are variants of what we know as “blue-green algae” and have been around for thousands of years. Recently, both have been rediscovered as sources of vital nutrients for humans, and in many ways are the healthiest foods we can eat.

Here are a few basic facts about spirulina and chlorella:

  • They grow abundantly in fresh water, especially in warm environments.
  • Both are known to fight allergies and help regulate blood pressure.
  • They are rich sources of protein and are even thought to prevent some types of cancer.

Often mistaken for each other, it helps to keep in mind that spirulina is a much older life form, perhaps 3,000 years older than its botanical ‘cousin’ chlorella, which boasts a much denser cell structure. This denseness is just one of the reasons that chlorella is able to act as a detoxification and cleansing agent for human blood.

Chlorella

Chlorella is also well known for its ability to fight various degenerative diseases as well as mercury poisoning. Its high protein content, natural healing potential and detoxification capability are just three of the reasons people seek out this ancient superfood.

Spirulina

Chlorella’s elder relative, spirulina, has a lengthy and proud history as a food source for Africans and South American indigenous peoples as early as the ninth century. Some experts think the plant could go a long way toward ending world hunger someday due to its low production cost, high nutrient value and seemingly magical abilities to heal numerous ailments.

Spirulina’s many advantages over other food sources include:

  • The ability to treat arsenic poisoning (a common problem in some areas of the world).
  • Its use as a staple in several seaside African cultures for hundreds of years.
  • The ability to grow in all sorts of climates and to flourish even without much care or attention.
  • The plant’s capability to treat many common human sicknesses, especially allergy-related maladies.
  • Its high nutrient content, including vitamins, minerals, fiber and especially protein.
  • There are currently no significant side effects for those who take spirulina as a supplement.

Both spirulina and chlorella can be taken in many forms, including as tablets, flakes, capsules and refined powders. In addition to their high protein content, these superfoods contain essential amino acids in their natural forms. In fact, as a percentage of their weight, spirulina and chlorella contain much more protein than beef.

In addition to some of the commonly known advantages of chlorella and spirulina, recent studies have shown these two powerful superfoods to be potential cancer-fighting agents. And when it comes to the natural control of blood pressure and cholesterol, there is certainly no more effective, safe and inexpensive way to health than regular consumption of spirulina and chlorella.

Much research is still being done on spirulina and chlorella and all of it is encouraging. Besides the plants’ ability to fight common symptoms of allergies and nasal congestion, promising data points to the possibility that these green foods will go a long way toward alleviating much more serious ailments.

In addition to all of the above, consider the possibility that both spirulina and chlorella could one day act as a major source of vitamins and minerals for those who suffer from starvation. Not only are these two types of algae incredibly powerful food supplements, they are also excellent foods in and of themselves.

Chlorella and spirulina are two substances that you will be hearing much more about in the near future, as science continues to unlock all the wonderful mysteries of these two food sources.
